A Building with History

The building that now houses the Museum and serves as a hub of contemporary cultural life in Polis Chrysochous was used until the mid-20th century primarily for the storage of carobs, hence its local name, the "Carob Warehouses." Carobs from producers across the region were gathered here, while foreign ships arrived at the nearby port of Latsi to load the valuable crop and transport it to international markets. Known in the Cypriot dialect as teratsia, carobs were the island’s most prized agricultural export, and ere were rightly called “the black gold” of Cyprus. Historic photographs reveal the hidden memory of the site, a living piece of the area’s rural and economic past. The building remembers and retells its former life, long before it was filled with exhibits and visitors.
